A style of enamelling in which the enamel is applied in a smooth layer directly to the surface of the article rather than to panels (plaquettes) which are attached to it. When such enamelling is doneis reserved areas, it is called 'en plein sur fond réservé'. It was much used by Carl Fabergé.
