A collection of small articles for personal use, such as a chatelaine with its suspended scissors, nail trimmer, tweezer, thimble, pencil, and the small container (étui) for such articles, orsometimes suspended articles for designing, e.g. a ruler, pair of compasses, and pencil.Such pieces became popular in the 18th century, some having the catch-plate of the chatelaine and the étui decorated en suite with hardstones.
